Governor Al Quie: An education reformer at 90 years strong

Happy 90th birthday, Governor Al Quie! You have been an inspiring role model for me as an example of bipartisanship, civility and public service. We need many more like you in public service today.

We had a chance to discuss our mutual passion for education reform at this week’s taping of KSTP-TV’s At Issue. Republican Gov. Quie was a member of the Reagan commission that produced the 1983 report, A Nation At Risk, issuing a wake-up call to America about our public education system. He has been a strong supporter of chartering, and continues to push for education reform today. His latest idea? Placing more educational opportunities at workplaces, so that parents can spend more time with their children during the work day, especially over lunch hour. Could this be another innovation that chartering can support? Keep the ideas coming, Governor Quie!
